Salvage Collective Photoshoot!

18/05/2023

Today we had planned to do a photoshoot using some of the second-hand clothes Salvage Collective uses for their workshops, to show people the type of clothes Salvage Collective rescues from landfill. We started by shooting a few looks outside as the weather was nice.

I was The photographer, using my own Canon 2000D camera, we had one model and a couple of stylists/assistants (Elan Chidlow and Brandon Bolland). We shot outside in front of the Innovation Studio as it has bright yellow and orange walls which match with the colours in Salvage Collective’s branding.

We also took some photos in the grassy bench-area next to Campus Halls to have more of a natural location. We then moved inside to the studio to shoot the remainder of our looks, as well as some images of the clothes on their own with the Salvage Collective banner, to focus more on the individual products rather than the styling.

Additionally, we shot some short clips for the Salvage Collective TikTok account, as the short-form content of a quick video is much more suited to TikTok than loads of images to swipe through. Overall, the shoot was really successful, we were able to show a wide range of ‘rags’ that Ed had saved from the charity shop they work at. This image-based content will also be refreshing to viewers of the Instagram account, as it breaks up all of the illustration posts with something new and exciting.

The general concept of the shoot was focused on showing the 'rags', so we didn't want to make the images too editorial and high-fashion. Our studio images were massively inspired by ASOS-style images - simple poses to show off the garments with a plain background and broad lighting. We the same thing outside except for the use of lights.

I edited the images to enhance the natural brightness and colours, not doing anything to massively alter the images as we wanted to keep them natural but eye-catching.

Overall, the shoot was a success! The images came out really well and will be used as marketing content for social media and any appearances, such as at GFW in June. See below for more of the images!
